One of the most frequently asked questions we’re asked is ‘Do I need planning permission for my garden office?’

All garden buildings – including garden rooms, garden offices and garden buildings – are subject to planning permission rules. But, most buildings won’t actually need planning permission for installation.

If you’re using your building as an insulated garden office, you need to consider two things:

• A small garden office (under 2.5m tall) isn’t high enough to put a substantial amount of insulation in the floor and ceiling. This means that it’ll be difficult to keep you warm in the winter and cool in summer. Of course, you’ll also be short of headroom!
• If you’re running a full-time company from a garden home office, planning permission may well be needed, even if the building is below 2.5m tall. But, if you rarely work in your garden office, planning permission may not be required.
